Family Photos Style Guide Made Easy: Free Download Included
One of the first questions I get asked after booking a session is what to wear. For some, this can be daunting, trust me I know. Have no fear, I’ve got you covered with some tips and a style guide to help you choose outfits that are cohesive, timeless, and beautiful.
I’ve complied some helpful tips for your next family session and included my free family photos style guide that gives you in-depth information on where to shop, what color schemes work well together and much more.
1. KEEP IT CLASSIC AND SIMPLE
When capturing multiple subjects, I like to keep things simple with solid colors with either a pop of color or a subtle print. For example, if mom is wearing a dress with a print, I suggest that everyone else wear sold colors that coordinate well together. Keeping your look classic and simple will guarantee that your images won’t look outdated.
2. START WITH ONE OUTFIT
Start with one outfit, use that as inspiration and go from there. I suggest starting with either mom or daughter since there are more prints and colors to choose from. For example, if mom is wearing a floral dress, a cohesive look can be created when coordinating colors and tones are pulled from her dress and used as the base.
3. COORDINATE DON’T MATCH
The days of everyone wearing the same outfit or colors are long gone. Not only does it look outdated but it doesn’t allow each person to shine individually. My suggestion is to choose a color palette of 2-3 complimentary colors and neutrals.
4. STAY TRUE TO YOUR STYLE
My goal as a photographer is to make you look like your best self. Stay away from current trends if you are not one to follow them. Your family’s unique style and personality should come through in the images.
5. KEEP THE LOCATION IN MIND
Although, I am all about capturing emotion and the love between families, the location you choose can really affect the look and feel you want your images to convey. With that said, when picking your outfits keep the location in mind. You probably wouldn’t want to wear a jacket, tall boots, and jeans to the beach. Also, think about the colors in the background, if you’re taking pictures at the park, wearing green probably won’t look great since you will blend right into the background.
