Finding the right family photographer can be a daunting task especially when you do a Google search and find a never-ending list in New York City and surrounding area. How do you choose? Where do you even begin? I’ve complied 5 tips to help you choose the right family photographer for you.
Tip 1: Pick a photographer whose style you love
The photographer you choose should reflect the style (lifestyle, traditional, documentary) of photography you love. When looking through a portfolio, be mindful of how their photos make you feel. Are you “wowed”, can you imagine your family engaged in those poses and in that setting? Do you prefer traditional images where everyone is looking at the camera or would you rather more natural shots that tell a story (lifestyle)? Pick a photographer that has a style that resonates with you.
Tip 2: Editing
Post processing is an important element in photography that many people may not consider. When viewing portfolio’s pay attention to how light is used, are the images light and airy or dark and moody? Are they warm or cool? Do they appear heavily retouched? There should be consistency in the overall look and feel of the images. Go through blog posts of recent work, this can give you a better understanding of what you can expect.
Tip 3: Photographer/Client Relationship
What sets many photographers apart is not only their experience and creativity but also how well they work with their clients. It is important to find someone who is able to put you at ease and is upfront about what to expect before, during and after the session. He/she should be able to answer any questions or concerns you may have and prepare you in advance.
Getting to know my clients and preparing them is a very important part of my process. Developing this relationship can help ease any tensions and create an overall better experience. I like to schedule time to chat with my clients either through zoom or in person to go over my process and what to expect, how long the shoot will take, location ideas, styling and how to prepare their kids for the shoot. I let them know that my sessions are relaxed, fun and focused on capturing their love and connection.
Tip 4: Read the Reviews
Testimonials are a powerful tool, they give you a sense of what it will be like working with that photographer. Go through reviews on Google, Yelp and on their website and see what people raving about? Are they good with kids? Are they responsive and professional? Pick a photographer that is known for what you need.
Tip 5: What’s your budget?
Consider your budget and how much you want to invest however, don’t let that be the overriding factor. Photographers have different price points for various reasons. Check your area and see what the going rate for family photos are but don’t be tempted to hire the cheapest, this may reflect a lack of skill and quality. Remember why you want the photos and how important it is to hire someone who is able to capture the true essence of your family. You will not regret investing in those precious memories.
Other elements to consider:
- Experience and how long they have been in business.
- What do their packages include? (digitals only, album, prints)
- Do they offer a client closet and styling advice?
- Do they provide a comprehensive contract?
- How do they handle cancelations or rescheduling?
Once you’ve done all of your research go with your gut feeling!
